What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation / ICSI)?

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a treatment in which the ovaries are stimulated with hormone injections, the eggs are collected and fertilised with sperm in the laboratory, and the resulting embryo is placed in the womb. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. It is used for blocked tubes, low sperm counts, endometriosis, unexplained infertility and when other treatments have not worked.

How is IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation / ICSI) done?

  1. Assessment of both partners: ovarian reserve (AMH, ultrasound), sperm analysis, tubes and womb
  2. Ovarian stimulation with daily hormone injections (about 10–12 days) and ultrasound monitoring
  3. Egg collection under light sedation
  4. Fertilisation in the laboratory (IVF or ICSI) and embryo culture
  5. Embryo transfer into the womb
  6. Pregnancy blood test (beta-hCG) about 12 days later

Who is IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation / ICSI) suitable for?

  • Couples with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Low sperm count or motility
  • Endometriosis and ovulation problems that have not responded to other treatments
  • Unexplained infertility after other treatments

Aftercare: what to watch out for

  • After embryo transfer you can return to light daily activities; strict bed rest is not needed.
  • Use the hormone support medicines exactly as prescribed until the pregnancy test.
  • Do not take a home pregnancy test too early; wait for the blood test.
  • Go to the clinic or emergency department for severe abdominal swelling, breathlessness or reduced urine (ovarian hyperstimulation).

Possible side effects and risks

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets)
  • Mild pain and bleeding after egg collection
  • Ectopic pregnancy

Are there alternatives?

Depending on the cause, ovulation induction with tablets or injections, intrauterine insemination (IUI) or surgery for the tubes or varicocele may be tried before IVF.
