What is intravenous Iron Infusion?

The first treatment for iron-deficiency anaemia is usually iron tablets by mouth. However, iron can be given into a vein if tablets cannot be taken because of stomach and bowel side effects, if there is poor absorption (coeliac disease, stomach surgery, inflammatory bowel disease), if blood loss is ongoing, or if rapid correction is needed late in pregnancy or before surgery. It is given as a drip in a hospital or healthcare facility, under observation. Iron stores can be filled with one or a few infusions. Looking for the underlying cause of blood loss (such as heavy periods or bleeding from the stomach or bowel) is an essential part of treatment.

How is intravenous Iron Infusion done?

  1. Confirming iron deficiency with blood count, ferritin and iron levels
  2. Investigating the cause of the deficiency
  3. Calculating the total iron requirement
  4. Infusion through a drip in a healthcare facility, with observation
  5. A check of blood levels after a few weeks
