What is mole Removal (Excision and Biopsy)?

Mole removal is a minor procedure under local anaesthesia. A mole that raises any concern for skin cancer is cut out completely (excision) and sent to a pathology laboratory, which is the only way to confirm whether it is benign. Raised moles thought to be harmless may be removed for cosmetic reasons by a shave technique. Burning a suspicious mole away with a laser is not recommended because no tissue is left to examine.

How is mole Removal (Excision and Biopsy) done?

  1. Examination by a dermatologist, including dermoscopy
  2. Choosing the method (full excision or shave removal)
  3. Removing the mole under local anaesthesia, with fine cosmetic stitches if needed
  4. Sending the tissue for pathology
  5. Stitch removal and discussion of the pathology result

Who is mole Removal (Excision and Biopsy) suitable for?

  • Moles showing ABCDE warning signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, several Colours, Diameter over 6 mm, or Evolving size, shape or colour
  • Moles that itch, bleed or have changed recently
  • Moles repeatedly rubbed by clothing, belts or shaving
  • Moles that are bothersome for cosmetic reasons

Aftercare: what to watch out for

  • Look after the dressing as instructed and keep it dry for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Stitches usually come out after 5–14 days depending on the site.
  • Protect the scar from the sun for several months to help it fade.
  • Always get your pathology result and follow any surveillance advice.

Possible side effects and risks

  • A scar
  • Infection or wound opening (uncommon)
  • Regrowth after shave removal
  • Raised (keloid) scarring in people prone to it

Are there alternatives?

Moles that are unchanged and not suspicious do not have to be removed; they can be monitored with dermoscopic photographs. People with many moles may be offered full-body mole mapping.

What affects the cost of mole removal?

The cost of mole removal depends on factors such as size and location of the mole; whether pathology testing is done; need for cosmetic stitching; number of moles, and is set by the doctor after an examination. Under Turkish rules on the advertising of health services, prices are not published on our site; you can ask the doctor directly when you request an appointment.

Getting treatment in Turkey as a visitor

  • Ask the doctor for a written treatment plan, timeline and total cost before you travel.
  • Check whether the doctor or clinic staff speak English, or bring a translator for the consultation.
  • Plan enough time for check-ups after the procedure before your return flight.
  • Keep copies of your X-rays, reports and the materials used (for example the implant brand) for your dentist or doctor at home.
  • In an emergency in Turkey, call 112 (free, 24/7). For poisoning, the National Poison Information Centre is 114.

Frequently asked questions

How much does mole removal cost in Turkey?

The cost of mole removal depends on factors such as size and location of the mole; whether pathology testing is done; need for cosmetic stitching; number of moles, and is set by the doctor after an examination. Under Turkish rules on the advertising of health services, prices are not published on our site; you can ask the doctor directly when you request an appointment.

Who is the best doctor for mole removal?

There is no single “best” doctor for everyone. The right doctor for you is experienced in mole removal, easy to reach, and explains the options clearly. Check whether the doctor lists this treatment on their profile, their specialty (dermatologist, plastic surgeon), the overall picture of patient reviews and the clinic’s location, and ask for a clear written treatment plan, timeline and cost at the first consultation. For major treatments you have the right to a second opinion. “En İyi Hekim” (Turkish for “best doctor”) is our brand name: we do not rank doctors as “best” and rankings cannot be bought.

How do I find a dermatologist for mole removal?

On each profile you can see reviews, the clinic address and available times, and send a free appointment request through our site.

How long does mole removal take?

Usually 15–30 minutes. Number of visits: One procedure, plus stitch removal and a results visit.

Can removing a mole cause cancer?

No. Removing a mole does not cause cancer; it allows a suspicious mole to be examined properly.

Can moles be removed with a laser?

Laser can be used for some clearly harmless surface lesions, but any mole suspected of being cancerous should be cut out surgically so it can be examined.

Will mole removal leave a scar?

Any surgical procedure leaves a mark, but with fine stitching and good wound care the scar usually becomes faint.
