What is intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI), known in Turkey as “aşılama”, involves washing the partner’s sperm in the laboratory to select the most motile sperm and placing them inside the womb around the time of ovulation. It is usually combined with medicines that stimulate or time ovulation. Because fertilisation takes place in the woman’s own fallopian tube, at least one tube must be open. It is commonly used for mild male factor infertility, ovulation problems and unexplained infertility.
How is intrauterine Insemination (IUI) done?
- Fertility assessment: tubal patency, hormone tests and semen analysis
- Ovulation-stimulating medicines and ultrasound follicle monitoring
- A trigger injection to time ovulation
- Preparing the sperm and placing it in the womb with a thin catheter
- Pregnancy test about two weeks later
