What is prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty)?
Prominent ears stick out from the head because a fold in the ear cartilage has not formed properly or because there is excess cartilage in the bowl of the ear. In otoplasty, an incision is made behind the ear and the cartilage is reshaped and held with permanent stitches. As ear cartilage is largely developed by the age of 5–6, the operation can be done in children before or around school age. In newborns, non-surgical ear moulding can be used.
How is prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty) done?
- Examination and measurement of the ears
- General anaesthesia in children; usually local anaesthesia in adults
- Incision behind the ear and reshaping of the cartilage
- Head bandage dressing
- A headband worn at night for several weeks, with follow-up visits
Who is prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty) suitable for?
- Adults bothered by how far their ears stick out
- Children whose ear cartilage has matured, usually from 5–6 years old
- Ear shape problems not corrected by moulding in infancy
Aftercare: what to watch out for
- Keep the dressing dry for the first few days.
- Wear the protective headband, especially at night, for as long as your surgeon advises.
- Avoid contact sports for several weeks.
- Seek urgent review for severe or increasing pain on one side, which can signal a blood collection or infection.
Possible side effects and risks
- Pain and swelling
- A scar behind the ear
- Slight asymmetry between the ears
- Ears partly springing back over time
- Rarely, infection of the cartilage
Are there alternatives?
In the first weeks of life, ear moulding devices can correct shape without surgery. Some centres offer incisionless suture techniques; suitability depends on the stiffness and shape of the cartilage.

Frequently asked questions
How much does otoplasty cost in Ankara?

Who is the best doctor for otoplasty in Ankara?
There is no single “best” doctor for everyone. The right doctor for you is experienced in otoplasty, easy to reach, and explains the options clearly. Check whether the doctor lists this treatment on their profile, their specialty (plastic surgeon, ENT specialist), the overall picture of patient reviews and the clinic’s location, and ask for a clear written treatment plan, timeline and cost at the first consultation. For major treatments you have the right to a second opinion. “En İyi Hekim” (Turkish for “best doctor”) is our brand name: we do not rank doctors as “best” and rankings cannot be bought.
How do I find a plastic surgeon for otoplasty in Ankara?
On each profile you can see reviews, the clinic address and available times, and send a free appointment request through our site.
How long does otoplasty take?
Usually 1–2 hours. Number of visits: One operation plus follow-up visits.
At what age can otoplasty be done?
Usually from age 5–6, when the ear cartilage is largely developed. There is no upper age limit for adults.
Does ear pinning affect hearing?
No. The operation reshapes only the outer ear and does not affect hearing.
How long before I can go back to work or school?
Most people return after about a week, while still wearing the headband at night.
