What is lymphoedema Treatment (Lymphatic Drainage)?

Lymphoedema is the build-up of protein-rich fluid under the skin because the lymph vessels or lymph nodes cannot carry fluid well enough. It is most often seen in the arm after removal of armpit lymph nodes or radiotherapy for breast cancer; it can also develop in the leg after gynaecological and urological cancer treatment. Lymphoedema due to a developmental problem of the lymph system present from birth (primary) is less common. The basis of treatment is complex decongestive therapy: in the intensive phase, gentle, rhythmic manual lymphatic drainage that stretches the skin, done by a certified therapist, followed by multilayer wrapping with short-stretch bandages, exercise under the bandage and skin care. Once swelling has decreased, a made-to-measure compression garment and a home programme continue in the maintenance phase. Lymphoedema usually does not go away completely; the aim is to reduce swelling and prevent progression and infections.

1. Doctor's examination to distinguish the swelling from other causes such as heart, kidney, vein or clot problems; Doppler ultrasound if needed
