What is phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine)?

Phytotherapy is the use of products made from plants or plant extracts for health purposes. Some modern medicines also come from plants; however, being “natural” does not mean a product is safe. Herbal products can damage the liver and kidneys and can interact with many medicines, especially blood thinners, antidepressants, the contraceptive pill, transplant and cancer medicines. In Turkey, phytotherapy is practised by certified doctors under the Regulation on Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices; products must also be standardised and comply with the relevant legislation. Herbal products should not be used instead of the treatment recommended by a doctor for any disease, and all products used must be reported to the doctor and pharmacist.

How is phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine) done?

  1. Doctor’s examination and clarifying the diagnosis
  2. Reviewing all medicines and supplements used
  3. Assessment for interactions and side effects
  4. Recommending a suitable, standardised product or identifying products that should not be used
  5. Check-ups at set intervals and liver and kidney tests if needed
