What is occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy aims for a person to do their self-care, school, work and leisure activities as independently as possible. The occupational therapist assesses the person's movement, perception, sensory and cognitive skills, their environment and daily routines, and uses activity-based work, recommends assistive equipment and suggests changes at home and school. In children it is used for developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and fine motor difficulties; in adults for stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, hand injuries and loss of function with ageing. Sensory integration therapy is one of the approaches used in occupational therapy; because its evidence is still developing, goals should be set measurably and followed up.
