What is IQ and Developmental Testing for Children?

Developmental and intelligence tests are standard measuring tools that compare a child's skills with a large sample of children of the same age. Developmental screening tests (for example the Denver developmental screening test and the Ankara Developmental Screening Inventory developed for Turkish children) quickly show whether there is a delay in gross and fine motor, language and personal-social skills in infancy and the pre-school years; they do not give a diagnosis but help decide whether detailed assessment is needed. Intelligence tests are used mostly at school age: individual tests such as the Turkish adaptation of the Wechsler intelligence scale for children and the Stanford-Binet measure verbal comprehension, visual-spatial thinking, reasoning, working memory and processing speed separately; non-verbal tests are preferred for children with language or hearing problems. School readiness tests assess a child's readiness for school skills. These tests are reliable only when given under standard conditions by psychologists or competent health professionals trained and certified to use them.
