What is eyelash Transplant?
An eyelash transplant moves a person's own hair follicles, usually taken one by one from the nape of the neck, to the edge of the upper (rarely the lower) eyelid. Because the lash line is very narrow and very close to the eye, each follicle is placed individually into tiny channels opened in the lid margin with fine curved needles, following the natural direction of the lashes. The transplanted hairs keep the character of scalp hair, so they grow faster and longer than lashes and need regular trimming, and often curling, for life. It is mainly used for lash loss after burns, accidents, tumour surgery or hair pulling (trichotillomania); doing it only for fuller lashes should be weighed carefully because of the upkeep and the risks to the eye. The cause of lash loss should be investigated first; conditions such as eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), alopecia areata or thyroid disease should be treated before.
How is eyelash Transplant done?
- Investigating the cause of lash loss, with an eye doctor's assessment if needed
- Planning the area and the direction of the lashes
- Taking a small number of single follicles from the nape under local anaesthesia
- Opening channels in the lid margin with a fine curved needle while the eye is protected, and placing the follicles one by one
- Eye ointment, dressing and a follow-up appointment
