What is hijama and Cupping Therapy?

Cupping is placing glass or plastic cups on the skin so that they create suction. In dry cupping only suction is applied; in hijama, also known as wet cupping, shallow cuts are made in the skin and a small amount of blood is drawn with the help of the cup. In Turkey, hijama falls under the Ministry of Health’s Regulation on Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices; it may only be done by doctors certified in this field, in licensed centres and with single-use materials. Although some studies suggest it may give short-term relief in neck and back pain, the evidence is limited and there is no strong scientific data that it treats diseases. Hijama should not be used instead of modern medical treatment for any disease; practice by uncertified people carries a risk of infection and blood-borne diseases.
