What is joint Injections (Hyaluronic Acid and Steroid)?

A joint injection delivers medicine directly into the joint space, most often the knee and sometimes the shoulder, hip or ankle. This page covers two common treatments. A steroid (corticosteroid) injection quickly suppresses inflammation in the joint; in a painful, swollen knee with fluid it can bring relief within a few days, but the effect is usually limited to weeks or a few months, and frequent repeats are not recommended. A hyaluronic acid injection (viscosupplementation, often called "knee gel") aims to support the slipperiness and cushioning of the joint fluid; its effect starts later. Studies on the benefit of hyaluronic acid are conflicting: some patients describe clear relief, while large studies have found only a small difference compared with placebo, and some guidelines do not recommend routine use. PRP, prepared from the patient's own blood, is a separate method covered on its own page. No injection regrows worn cartilage; it should be considered together with exercise and weight control.

How is joint Injections (Hyaluronic Acid and Steroid) done?

  1. Examination and X-ray to assess the degree of arthritis and whether the pain comes from the joint
  2. Questions about infection, diabetes and blood thinner use
  3. Cleaning the skin under sterile conditions; local anaesthetic if needed
  4. Draining any fluid in the joint first; injecting the medicine into the joint, with ultrasound guidance if needed
  5. Brief observation, a plaster over the needle site and advice for daily life
