What is sperm Freezing?
In sperm freezing, the sperm in a semen sample is mixed with a protective fluid and stored at very low temperature in liquid nitrogen tanks. Its most important use is to protect a man's fertility before treatments that can permanently damage sperm production, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or testicular surgery. Every man diagnosed with cancer who may want children in future should therefore be told about this option before treatment starts; because the sample can usually be given within a few days, it does not delay cancer treatment. It is also used for men who cannot give a sample on the day of IVF, to store sperm found by micro-TESE, and before some operations. The sample is given by masturbation; if no semen can be produced or there is no sperm in the semen, sperm can be taken surgically from the testis and frozen. Some sperm lose viability after thawing, so stored sperm is usually used with IVF (ICSI) rather than insemination. In Turkey, storage can only be done in authorised assisted reproduction centres; the storage period must be renewed in writing at set intervals, and frozen sperm can only be used within the man's own marriage.
