What is broken Nose Treatment (Closed Reduction)?

The nasal bone is the most commonly broken bone in the face; sports injuries, falls, fights and road accidents are the main causes. After a fracture there can be swelling, bruising, bleeding, a crooked nose and difficulty breathing through the nose. If the bones have not moved, treatment is usually not needed. If they have shifted, a procedure called closed reduction brings them back to their original position without cutting the skin, using an instrument placed inside the nose and the fingers on the outside. Timing matters: because swelling makes examination difficult, the procedure is usually done a few days later, before the bone has healed: usually within the first 1–2 weeks in adults, and within a shorter time in children, whose bones heal faster. If this window is missed, or if the cartilage wall in the middle of the nose (septum) is also badly damaged, the problem is corrected with open surgery (septorhinoplasty) after healing is complete. A collection of blood in the septum (septal haematoma) is an emergency that must be drained without delay.

2. Examining inside the nose and ruling out a septal haematoma
3. An ENT or plastic surgery examination once swelling goes down, usually within a few days; CT if needed
4. Putting the bones back in place by hand and with an instrument under local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia
5. Packing or silicone splints inside the nose if needed, and a protective splint outside
