What is egg Freezing?
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) is a way of carrying a woman's fertility forward in time. As in IVF, the ovaries are stimulated for several days with hormone injections, the developing eggs are collected through the vagina with a fine needle under sedation, and the mature ones are stored using a very fast freezing technique (vitrification). When they are to be used, the eggs are thawed, injected with the husband's sperm (ICSI) and the resulting embryo is transferred to the womb. Because egg quality and number fall with age, the factor that most affects success is the age at which the eggs are frozen; the more eggs frozen, the better the future chance of pregnancy. Egg freezing does not, however, guarantee a baby in future. In Turkey, assisted reproduction is regulated by the Ministry of Health: egg freezing can only be done at authorised centres, for medical reasons defined in the regulations, such as conditions that threaten the ovaries like cancer treatment, a low ovarian reserve or a family history of early menopause. Frozen eggs can only be used by the woman herself, within marriage, with her husband's sperm; donor eggs or sperm and surrogacy are prohibited. Whether freezing without a medical reason, only to postpone pregnancy ("social" freezing), is possible and what the current conditions are should be confirmed with the centre you apply to, based on the regulations.
