What is anomaly Scan (Detailed Pregnancy Ultrasound)?
The detailed ultrasound (level II scan or anomaly scan) is a detailed examination in the second trimester, usually between 18 and 23 weeks. At this stage the baby's organs are developed enough to be assessed with ultrasound. The scan systematically checks the baby's head and brain structures, face and lips, spine, the chambers of the heart and the great vessels, stomach, kidneys, bladder, abdominal wall, arms and legs; the baby's measurements are compared with the stage of pregnancy, and the position of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid and, if needed, the length of the cervix are assessed. The detailed scan can detect many structural anomalies, but it cannot show every problem. Some heart and brain anomalies become clearer later in pregnancy, and chromosomal differences such as Down syndrome cannot be diagnosed for certain by ultrasound. Image quality depends on the baby's position, the thickness of the mother's abdominal wall and the amount of fluid. A 4D scan, which shows the baby's face in three dimensions, is mostly a visual examination and does not replace the detailed scan.
How is anomaly Scan (Detailed Pregnancy Ultrasound) done?
- Confirming the stage of pregnancy and reviewing earlier screening results
- Systematic examination of the organs through the abdomen, and measuring the baby
- Placenta position, amniotic fluid and, if needed, cervical length by vaginal ultrasound
- A short break, or a repeat on another day, if the baby's position is not suitable
- Sharing the findings with the family; referral for perinatology, fetal echocardiography or genetic counselling if needed
