What is shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction (Li-ESWT)?
Low-intensity shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT) applies low-energy acoustic waves through the skin to different points on the penis. Laboratory studies have shown that these waves can stimulate the growth of small new blood vessels and the function of the vessel lining; the aim is to improve the blood flow that produces erections, rather than working only at the time of sex like a medicine. Results of studies in people are mixed: some studies saw a small to moderate improvement on rating scales, especially in men with mild, vascular erectile dysfunction, while others found no meaningful difference compared with a sham (placebo) treatment. Because the devices, energy levels and session protocols differ between studies, results are hard to compare, and how long any effect lasts is unclear. International guidelines do not agree either: some mention it as an option for selected mild cases, while others still regard it as experimental.
