What is penile Implant (Penile Prosthesis)?

A penile implant is a medical device placed inside the two cylindrical chambers that make up the erectile tissue of the penis (corpora cavernosa). There are two main types. With a bendable (semi-rigid) implant, the penis always stays somewhat firm and is lifted by hand before sex. An inflatable implant (usually three-piece) has a fluid reservoir placed inside the abdomen, a small pump in the scrotum and cylinders in the penis; pressing the pump fills the cylinders, they are emptied after sex, and the penis returns to a more natural look. An implant usually does not change sexual desire, sensation in the penile skin, ejaculation or orgasm; however, the penis's own natural ability to get an erection is lost permanently. For this reason the decision is made after less invasive options such as medicines, penile injections and vacuum devices have been tried or found unsuitable, after detailed discussion with the patient and, if possible, his partner.

How is penile Implant (Penile Prosthesis) done?

  1. Investigating the cause of erectile dysfunction: blood sugar, hormones and vascular assessment if needed
  2. Choosing the type of implant according to the patient's manual dexterity, expectations and previous operations
  3. Screening for urinary and skin infections before surgery and optimising blood sugar
  4. Placing the cylinders and, if needed, the pump and reservoir through a cut at the base of the penis or the upper scrotum under spinal or general anaesthesia
  5. Preventive antibiotics, a short-term urinary catheter and training on starting to use the implant after a few weeks
