What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a method rooted in traditional Chinese medicine in which very fine needles are inserted at specific points on the body. In Turkey, acupuncture falls under the Ministry of Health’s regulation on traditional and complementary medicine (GETAT) practices; it may only be done by doctors with an acupuncture certificate (and dentists within their own field), in units or practice centres authorised by the Ministry. Scientific studies show that it can help some patients with chronic low back and neck pain, knee osteoarthritis pain, tension-type headache, prevention of migraine attacks, and nausea after surgery or from chemotherapy, but the effect is generally moderate. For many other uses the evidence is insufficient. Acupuncture does not replace medical treatment of a diagnosed disease; it should be used as a complement after a doctor’s assessment.

How is acupuncture done?

  1. Doctor’s examination, investigating the cause of the complaint and reviewing current treatments
  2. Deciding on the points to be used and the session plan
  3. Cleaning the skin and inserting single-use sterile needles
  4. Leaving the needles in place for a while; mild electrical stimulation if needed
  5. Removing the needles and assessing any change in the complaint at the next session
