What is inlays and Onlays?

An inlay fills the cavity between the cusps (the chewing bumps) of a tooth; an onlay also covers one or more cusps. Both are made outside the mouth. When a large part of a tooth has been lost to decay or an old filling, a direct filling may not be strong enough, while a crown may require removing more healthy tooth. An inlay or onlay sits between the two and preserves healthy tissue. It is made of ceramic or composite from a conventional impression or a digital scan taken with an intraoral scanner, and fixed to the tooth with special adhesives. On root-canal-treated teeth, a one-piece restoration called an endocrown is sometimes used.

How is inlays and Onlays done?

  1. Examination and X-rays; removing decay and the old filling and shaping the cavity
  2. A conventional impression or a digital scan
  3. A temporary filling if it is made in a lab
  4. Trying in the piece and checking colour and fit
  5. Bonding with a special adhesive and adjusting the bite
