What is rotator Cuff Repair Surgery?
The rotator cuff is made up of the tendons of four muscles that run from the shoulder blade to the head of the upper arm bone and keep the joint stable when lifting and rotating the arm. In young people, tears are usually caused by an injury such as a fall or sudden strain; after 40, they develop as the tendon wears over the years. During surgery, the torn tendon is reattached to where it belongs using small anchors placed in the bone and stitches. Today this is usually done arthroscopically through a few small holes around the shoulder; large tears may also need a small open incision. In the same operation, a bony spur pressing on the tendon can be shaved and the biceps tendon treated. It takes months for the repaired tendon to heal to the bone; success depends largely on the size and age of the tear, muscle quality and following rehabilitation. Not every tear needs surgery; in older people especially, many partial and degenerative tears can be managed with physiotherapy.
How is rotator Cuff Repair Surgery done?
- Examination and ultrasound or MRI to assess tear size, retraction and fatty change in the muscle
- General anaesthesia, usually with a nerve block in the neck
- Examining the joint with the arthroscope and preparing the torn edges
- Placing anchors in the bone and stitching the tendon to the bone
- A sling that holds the arm at a set angle and a rehabilitation plan
