What is pavlik Harness (Hip Dysplasia Treatment)?

Developmental dysplasia of the hip means the head of the thigh bone does not sit fully in the hip socket, or the socket develops shallow. When it is diagnosed early through newborn examination and hip ultrasound, a Pavlik harness started in the first months provides non-surgical treatment in most babies. With straps over the shoulders and chest, the harness holds the baby’s legs with the knees bent and the hips spread outwards (frog position); this position helps the head of the thigh bone settle into the socket and the socket to deepen. The harness is usually worn all day and adjusted with ultrasound checks. Its effectiveness falls as the baby grows, so early diagnosis is very important.

How is pavlik Harness (Hip Dysplasia Treatment) done?

  1. Hip examination and hip ultrasound
  2. Fitting and adjusting the harness to the baby’s size
  3. Teaching parents about dressing, nappy changes and care
