What is botulinum Toxin for Migraine?
Chronic migraine means headache on at least 15 days a month, with at least 8 of those days having migraine features. Botulinum toxin can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks by lowering the release of some substances involved in pain signalling. It is injected at set points on the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and shoulders using a standard protocol and is usually repeated every three months. Its effect varies from person to person; the result is assessed after at least two treatments. It has not been shown to work in episodic migraine (fewer than 15 days a month). If there is medication-overuse headache from painkillers, that problem must also be addressed.
