What is earwax Removal?
Earwax (cerumen) is a natural secretion that protects and moisturises the outer ear canal and defends against germs. Normally it moves out by itself with jaw movements and does not need cleaning. In some people, however, earwax builds up into a plug because of overproduction, a narrow or curved ear canal, use of hearing aids or in-ear headphones and, especially, pushing wax inwards with cotton buds. This causes a feeling of fullness, reduced hearing, ringing, itching and, rarely, dizziness. A doctor removes the plug in one of three ways: rinsing with water at body temperature (irrigation), suction with a fine aspirator under a microscope or endoscope, and mechanical removal with small instruments. Irrigation is not done for people with a hole in the eardrum, previous ear surgery or a tube in the ear; suction is preferred in that case. For hard plugs, softening drops may be recommended for a few days before cleaning.
