What is breastfeeding Support (Lactation Counselling)?
Although breastfeeding is natural, for most mothers and babies it is a skill that has to be learned. In the first days, a poor latch can lead to cracked, sore nipples, incomplete emptying to engorgement and blocked ducts, and in the end to a drop in milk supply. In lactation counselling a breastfeed is observed; latch and position are corrected, and whether the baby is feeding enough is assessed by tracking weight and wet nappies. Plans are made for special situations such as tongue-tie, prematurity, twins and the mother returning to work. Signs of mastitis such as fever and a red, painful breast need a doctor’s assessment.

- Observing a breastfeed
- Correcting latch and position; training in expressing and storing milk if needed
- A plan for specific problems (sore nipples, engorgement, low weight gain)
