What is bone Grafting for Dental Implants?
After a tooth is lost the jawbone gradually shrinks. If there is not enough bone height or width, an implant cannot be placed safely. Bone grafting adds bone substitute material or the patient’s own bone to the area, usually covered with a membrane, so new bone grows into it. It can be done at the time of implant placement or months beforehand. In the upper back jaw, a sinus lift raises the sinus floor to create room for implants. Healing time is an important consideration for patients travelling for treatment.
