What is mole Mapping (Digital Dermoscopy)?
Mole mapping is a monitoring method that helps detect skin cancers, especially melanoma, early. Dermoscopy is examining moles under special light and magnification; it shows pigment patterns and vessel structures that cannot be seen with the naked eye. In digital dermoscopy these images are saved; in mole mapping, full-body photos are also taken and the position of each mole is marked. At a check-up a few months or a year later, the same images are compared and moles that are new or have changed in shape, colour or size are identified. This reduces unnecessary removal of harmless-looking moles while catching suspicious changes early. The method does not give a diagnosis; a suspicious mole can only be assessed definitively by removing it and examining it in pathology. AI-assisted software can help but does not replace a doctor's examination.
