What is group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist works with several people at once and members learning from each other is part of recovery. Some groups are structured and time-limited, aimed at a specific problem such as social anxiety, depression or addiction; cognitive behavioural group programmes and emotion regulation skills groups are of this type. Others are process-focused groups in which members observe their ways of relating "here and now". Psychodrama is a group method in which experiences are worked through by acting them out. In closed groups, members are set at the start; open groups can take new members over time. Seeing that you are not alone, gaining hope from others' experiences and trying new behaviours in a safe setting are the key factors in groups. Research shows that in depression, anxiety disorders and substance use disorders, group therapy can often have an effect close to individual therapy. Self-help or support groups can be valuable but are not the same as group therapy run by a professional.

How is group Therapy done?

  1. An individual preliminary meeting to assess suitability for the group
  2. Explaining the rules on confidentiality, attendance and relationships outside the group
  3. First sessions to get to know each other and share personal goals
  4. Sharing, feedback, role-play or skills practice in regular sessions
  5. Reviewing gains and saying goodbye in the last sessions
