What is cleft Lip and Palate Surgery?
Cleft lip and palate are common birth differences that form when the middle of the face does not join in the first weeks of pregnancy. The cleft can be in the lip only, the palate only or both, on one or both sides. A cleft lip is usually noticed on a pregnancy ultrasound; a cleft of the palate only is found by examination after birth. Treatment is not a single operation but a process from birth to the end of adolescence: the lip is usually repaired in the first months and the palate before speech develops, at about 9–18 months. At older ages, bone grafting of the gum cleft, speech operations, nose and lip revisions and orthodontic treatment may be needed. The best results come when a team of a plastic surgeon, ENT specialist, orthodontist, speech and language therapist, paediatrician and, if needed, a geneticist follows the baby together. Because in some babies the cleft can be part of a syndrome, a general assessment is also done.
