What is ingrown Toenail Treatment?
An ingrown toenail, usually on the big toe, is when the side edge of the nail digs into the surrounding skin. Cutting the corners of the nails too deep, narrow-toed shoes, heavy sweating, an inherited curved nail shape and knocks to the toe are the main causes. At first there is redness and pain; as it progresses, inflammation, discharge and red, easily bleeding tissue (granulation tissue) develop. In mild cases, placing cotton or a thin gutter under the nail edge and cutting the nail straight across may be enough. For moderate cases and curved nails, special wires and braces bonded to the nail surface or passed through the nail tip slowly flatten the nail so the edge lifts off the skin; this is painless but needs renewing every so often for a few months as the nail grows. For recurrent or advanced cases, partial nail root removal (partial matrixectomy) is done: under local anaesthesia, the narrow ingrowing strip of nail is removed together with its root, and that part of the root is destroyed chemically (phenol) or surgically so the edge does not grow back. Pulling out the whole nail is not a lasting solution on its own; the nail often grows back ingrown.
How is ingrown Toenail Treatment done?
- Examination of the stage, inflammation and discharge; questions about diabetes and circulation problems
- For mild cases: teaching nail cutting, warm soaks and placing cotton or a gutter under the edge
- For curved nails: applying a nail wire or corrective brace and renewing it regularly
- For recurrent cases: local anaesthesia at the base of the toe and removing the ingrowing strip with its root
- Destroying the root cells with phenol or surgically, cleaning away inflamed tissue if needed, and a dressing
