What is botulinum Toxin for Spasticity?
Spasticity is involuntary stiffness in muscles, caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord, that increases when the muscle is stretched quickly. It limits joint movement and can cause pain, difficulty with care and permanent shortening (contracture). When botulinum toxin is injected into overactive muscles, the muscle relaxes; during this period, range of movement and function are increased with stretching, splints and physiotherapy. The effect usually lasts a few months and is repeated if needed. Toe walking in children with cerebral palsy and arm and hand tightness after stroke are common uses. Ultrasound or electrical stimulation guidance can be used to identify the target muscles accurately.
