What is well-Child Check-Ups and Growth Monitoring?

Well-child check-ups (baby and child monitoring) are planned visits while the child has no complaints. At each visit, height, weight and, in babies, head circumference are measured and followed on growth charts (percentiles); the course of the curve over time matters more than a single measurement. Age-appropriate motor, language, social and cognitive milestones are asked about, and developmental screening tests are used if needed. The red reflex of the eye, squint, hearing, hips, heart sounds, genital area and teeth are examined according to age. The vaccination schedule is reviewed, and guidance is given on feeding, breastfeeding, sleep, a safe sleep environment, preventing accidents and screen use. In Turkey, baby and child monitoring is also done by family doctors in line with Ministry of Health protocols; visits are frequent in the first year, become less frequent with age, and from school age once a year is usually enough. Ask your family doctor or paediatrician for the current schedule. If a problem is suspected, tests, imaging or a specialist referral are arranged.
