What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a talking treatment using science-based methods to help a person understand and change their patterns of feeling, thinking, behaving and relating. It is not one method but an umbrella term: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) targets thoughts and behaviours; psychodynamic therapy looks at how past experiences and unconscious processes affect current problems; interpersonal therapy focuses on relationships and role changes; acceptance and commitment therapy aims at living according to values rather than struggling with difficult emotions; solution-focused and supportive therapies can be shorter. This page describes face-to-face individual psychotherapy in general; we have separate pages for online therapy, CBT and EMDR. Research shows psychotherapy is effective in depression and anxiety disorders, and works better together with medication in moderate and severe cases. Whatever school is chosen, the trusting relationship between client and therapist is one of the most important shared factors affecting the outcome. In Turkey, psychotherapy is provided by psychiatrists and by specialists with postgraduate training in clinical psychology; asking about the therapist's training and method is the client's right.

How is psychotherapy done?

  2. Referral for psychiatric assessment or psychological testing if needed
  3. Formulating the problem together and choosing a suitable approach
  4. Regular sessions at the agreed frequency, with work between sessions
  5. Reviewing goals, spacing out sessions and ending
