What is ponseti Method (Clubfoot Treatment)?

Congenital clubfoot is a birth deformity in which the baby’s foot turns inwards and downwards and does not correct on its own. The Ponseti method is now the standard treatment worldwide and gives most babies a functional foot without the need for major surgery. Treatment usually starts in the first weeks after birth. Each week the foot is gently manipulated and put in a cast from the groin to the toes in the new position. After a few casts, in most babies the Achilles tendon is released with a small procedure (tenotomy). Once corrected, a brace with special shoes joining both feet is worn full-time at first and then at night for several years to stop the foot turning in again. Sticking with this brace is the most important condition for preventing relapse.
