What is custom Orthotic Insoles and Foot Pressure Analysis?

An orthotic insole is an orthosis placed inside the shoe that supports the arch, redistributes pressure or offloads a particular area. Off-the-shelf insoles are made from standard moulds; custom insoles are made from a plaster or foam mould of the foot, a 3D scan and pressure measurements. Foot pressure analysis (pedobarography) shows, on a colour map, how much load falls on which points of the sole as the person stands and walks on a platform or a sensor treadmill. This measurement alone does not give a diagnosis; it is interpreted together with examination and, if needed, X-rays. Insoles are known to reduce symptoms in flat feet, heel spurs and plantar fasciitis, forefoot pain and high-pressure points at risk of ulcers in people with diabetes. However, evidence that custom insoles are clearly better than a well-chosen off-the-shelf insole is limited for many conditions; what matters most is the right indication and suitable shoes.

How is custom Orthotic Insoles and Foot Pressure Analysis done?

  1. Examination of the feet and knees to find the source of pain and the foot type
  2. A weight-bearing foot X-ray if needed
  3. Static and dynamic pressure analysis: measurements while standing and walking on the platform
  4. Taking a mould of the foot with foam, plaster or a 3D scanner
  5. Making the insole, trying it in the shoes and a check-up a few weeks later
