What is insulin Resistance Diet?
Insulin resistance means that muscle, liver and fat tissue respond less to insulin, so the pancreas has to release more insulin to keep blood sugar at the same level. Rather than being a disease diagnosis in its own right, it is a metabolic state that signals a higher future risk of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, high triglycerides and cardiovascular disease. In Turkey it has become a frequently given “diagnosis” based on fasting insulin and HOMA-IR values; however, there is no universal cut-off for these tests, measurements vary between laboratories, and a single result is not enough for a treatment decision. The internal medicine doctor uses fasting blood sugar, HbA1c and, if needed, a glucose tolerance test to check for prediabetes or diabetes, and also assesses the liver, thyroid and cholesterol. In nutrition, the aim is not to cut out carbohydrate completely but to reduce waist size, limit refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks, and increase fibre and protein. Because muscles are the tissue that uses most blood sugar, regular movement and strength training are as important as diet. Sleep routine and stress management also affect insulin sensitivity.
How is insulin Resistance Diet done?
- Internal medicine assessment: fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, lipids, liver tests and, if needed, a glucose tolerance test
- Baseline measurements of waist circumference, weight and body analysis
- Discussing meal routine, snacking habits, sleep and activity level
- The plate model: sample menus with half vegetables, a quarter protein and a quarter whole grains or pulses
- An activity plan and reviewing progress with the doctor through repeat tests every 3–6 months
