What is bunion Surgery (Hallux Valgus Correction)?
Hallux valgus (a bunion) is when the big toe drifts outwards towards the second toe while the first long foot bone at the base of the big toe angles inwards, creating a prominent bump on the inner edge of the foot. Family tendency, foot shape and narrow, high-heeled shoes play a role. The aim of surgery is not just to shave the bump but to correct the alignment of the toe and the foot bone; removing the bump alone can lead to the deformity coming back. In mild and moderate deformities, the bone is cut (osteotomy) near its end; in severe deformities, through its shaft or base. The bone is shifted and fixed with screws. In very severe cases or when there is arthritis in the joint, fusing the joint (arthrodesis) may be needed. In recent years minimally invasive techniques using small cuts have also been used; their long-term results look similar to open methods, but the evidence is still developing. Bunion surgery is done for pain and difficulty wearing shoes, not for appearance.
