What is glaucoma Surgery and Laser Treatment?

Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is slowly damaged, usually because of high pressure inside the eye, and vision that is lost does not come back. The aim of treatment is not to improve vision but to lower the pressure so that the damage stops or slows down. The first step is usually eye drops. When drops are not enough, cannot be used regularly or cause side effects, laser and surgery come in. In open-angle glaucoma, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) helps the eye's drainage tissue let fluid out more easily. In narrow-angle glaucoma, laser iridotomy makes a tiny hole in the iris to prevent a sudden pressure attack. In advanced or fast-progressing cases, trabeculectomy (a new outflow route under the white of the eye), a drainage tube or valve, or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), which can be combined with cataract surgery, is used. The method is chosen according to the type and stage of glaucoma and the patient's other eye problems.

How is glaucoma Surgery and Laser Treatment done?

  1. Eye pressure measurement, angle examination (gonioscopy), visual field test and OCT of the nerve fibres
  2. Choosing a laser or surgical method according to the type and stage of glaucoma
  3. Laser: a few minutes as an outpatient with numbing drops
  4. Surgery: creating a new drainage route or placing a tube or valve under local or general anaesthesia
  5. Frequent pressure checks on day one, in the first week and in the following weeks
