What is child and Teen Nutrition Counselling?

Child and teen nutrition counselling looks at the needs of a growing body, the child’s stage of development and family life together. Its main difference from adult diets is that the goal is often not weight loss but progress along a healthy path on the growth chart; in many overweight children it is enough to keep weight stable while height increases. Picky eating is common, especially between the ages of 2 and 6, and fades over time in most children; forcing, or using food as a reward or punishment, usually makes the problem worse. Counselling recommends approaches based on the principle that “the parent decides what, when and where food is offered; the child decides how much to eat”, repeated pressure-free exposure to new foods, less eating in front of screens and changes that involve the whole family. In adolescence, rapid growth, sport, worries about acne and body image come into play; strict diets are carefully avoided at this stage because they can raise the risk of eating disorders. A child who eats very little, loses weight or whose growth slows needs a paediatrician’s assessment first.

How is child and Teen Nutrition Counselling done?

  1. Paediatrician’s assessment and plotting height and weight on the growth chart
  2. A three-day food diary and a conversation with the family and child about mealtime habits
  3. If needed, reviewing tests such as iron, vitamin D or coeliac screening together with the doctor
  4. An age-appropriate meal routine, portions and snack plan; strategies for introducing new foods
  5. Regular check-ups with growth monitoring and planning school meals
