What is limb Lengthening Surgery?

Limb lengthening is based on the principle of cutting a bone in a controlled way and moving the two parts very slowly apart so that new bone forms in the gap (distraction osteogenesis). Lengthening is done with ring or one-sided frames fixed outside the bone, or with lengthening nails placed inside the bone and controlled from outside. Its main medical uses are a marked difference in length between the two legs, bone shortening present from birth or after a fracture, and some skeletal growth disorders. Cosmetic limb lengthening, done only to increase height in healthy people of normal height, is controversial: the lengthening phase takes weeks and bone consolidation takes months; intensive physiotherapy is needed throughout, and serious problems that can be permanent, such as joint stiffness, nerve damage and the bone not healing, can occur. In children and teenagers with short stature, the growth plates and hormonal causes should first be investigated by paediatric endocrinology.

How is limb Lengthening Surgery done?

  1. Detailed examination, leg length measurement and full-leg X-rays
  2. Assessing whether the growth plates have closed, bone quality and general health; psychological assessment for cosmetic requests
  3. Cutting the bone and placing the frame or lengthening nail under general or spinal anaesthesia
  4. After a few days' wait, lengthening in very small daily steps with regular X-ray checks
  5. Once lengthening ends, a bone consolidation phase, intensive physiotherapy and then removal of the implants
