What is nutrition in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?
Nutrition counselling in pregnancy and breastfeeding means planning meals, weight gain and food safety around the needs of mother and baby. “Eating for two” is a common misconception: energy needs do not rise noticeably in the first three months and rise moderately in the later months; what really increases is the need for folate, iron, iodine, calcium, vitamin D and good-quality protein. The recommended weight gain depends on body mass index before pregnancy; a mother who starts underweight is expected to gain more, and one who starts overweight to gain less. Weight-loss diets are not followed during pregnancy. The dietitian plans how to cope with nausea and heartburn, how to prevent constipation, how to distribute meals and carbohydrates if gestational diabetes has been diagnosed, and how to avoid risky foods such as raw meat, raw dairy products and fish high in mercury. During breastfeeding, energy and fluid needs rise again; weight loss after birth is aimed to be slow and not to affect breastfeeding. Supplements are taken on your obstetrician’s advice.
How is nutrition in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding done?
- Assessing the week of pregnancy, pre-pregnancy weight, previous pregnancies and current complaints
- Reviewing the tests requested by the obstetrician (such as blood count and glucose tolerance test) together
- Setting target weight gain by week and a meal routine
- Specific advice for nausea, heartburn, constipation or gestational diabetes; food-safety education
- Updating the plan for the period after birth and breastfeeding
