What is vitrectomy (Retina Surgery)?
Vitrectomy is an operation in which the vitreous gel that fills the eyeball is cleared with fine instruments passed through tiny openings in the wall of the eye. This allows membranes pulling on the retina to be peeled away, tears to be sealed with laser and bleeding to be cleared. At the end of surgery, gas or silicone oil may be put into the eye to keep the retina in place. The gas is absorbed by itself over time; silicone oil is usually removed months later in a second procedure. For patients given gas, keeping face down or in a specific head position for a set number of days is an important part of healing. Retinal detachment is an emergency: a sudden curtain over your vision, flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters need an eye doctor without delay.
How is vitrectomy (Retina Surgery) done?
- Retinal examination, OCT and eye ultrasound if needed
- Local or general anaesthesia
- Removing the vitreous through small openings in the eye wall
- Peeling membranes, laser, and gas or silicone oil if needed
- Eye dressing and instructions on head position
