What is jaw Cyst Surgery?
A jaw cyst is a slowly growing cavity inside the jaw bone filled with fluid or semi-solid material. The most common are cysts at the root tip of a dead or infected tooth, and cysts surrounding the crown of an impacted tooth, often a wisdom tooth. Many jaw cysts cause no symptoms for a long time and are found by chance on a routine panoramic X-ray; as they grow they can cause swelling of the jaw, teeth moving or loosening, or pain with infection. Treatment usually removes the cyst in one piece (enucleation). For very large cysts, the cyst may first be opened into the mouth so it shrinks (marsupialisation) and then removed. The definitive diagnosis is only made by pathology of the removed tissue; because some cyst-like lesions have a higher tendency to come back, this result decides the follow-up plan.
How is jaw Cyst Surgery done?
- Examination, panoramic X-ray and dental CT to show the cyst's size and nearby structures
- Planning whether the related tooth needs a root canal, root-tip surgery or extraction
- Local anaesthesia; sedation or general anaesthesia for large cysts
- Lifting the gum to reach the bone and removing the cyst whole, or opening it to shrink it
- Cleaning the cavity and filling it with a graft if needed, stitching, and sending the tissue to pathology
