What is excessive Sweating Treatment (Hyperhidrosis)?

Hyperhidrosis is when the body sweats far more than it needs to regulate temperature. The most common type is primary hyperhidrosis, which usually starts in the teenage years, affects the armpits, hands, feet or face on both sides, eases during sleep and is not caused by a particular disease. Sweating all over the body, sweating that starts newly in adulthood or night sweats that wake you may be secondary sweating caused by an overactive thyroid, diabetes, menopause, infections, some medicines and, rarely, blood disorders; in that case the cause should be investigated first. Treatment is stepwise. Prescription antiperspirants containing aluminium salts are the first step. For hand and foot sweating, iontophoresis, in which the hands or feet are placed in water and a mild electric current is passed, is effective. Botulinum toxin injections, which temporarily stop the sweat glands in the armpits and palms, give relief lasting months. Oral medicines that reduce sweating can be used in selected people. In severe cases that do not respond to other methods, surgical removal of the armpit sweat glands or endoscopic sympathectomy, which cuts the nerve chain inside the chest, is considered; the risk of increased (compensatory) sweating elsewhere on the body after sympathectomy must be discussed before surgery.

How is excessive Sweating Treatment (Hyperhidrosis) done?

  1. Questions about where the sweating is, when it started, whether there are night sweats and how it affects daily life
  2. Tests such as thyroid and blood sugar if needed to rule out secondary causes
  3. First step: a prescription antiperspirant and skincare advice
  4. If not enough: iontophoresis sessions or botulinum toxin injections
  5. In severe, resistant cases: discussing surgical options together with their risks
