What is voice Therapy?

A large share of hoarseness comes from using the voice wrongly or too much. Teachers, singers, call-centre workers and children are at risk of vocal cord nodules. In voice therapy, breath support, voice production and resonance exercises reduce the load on the vocal cords; harmful habits such as shouting, whispering and frequent throat clearing are stopped, and vocal hygiene rules such as drinking enough fluids and controlling reflux are taught. Most vocal cord nodules can shrink with therapy; with polyps and cysts, therapy is usually given after surgery. Hoarseness lasting more than two to three weeks, especially in smokers, needs an ENT examination and imaging of the vocal cords.

How is voice Therapy done?

  1. ENT examination and imaging of the vocal cords (laryngoscopy, stroboscopy)
  2. Voice analysis and assessment of voice-use habits
  3. A personalised exercise programme
  4. Vocal hygiene education
  5. Check-ups at set intervals and repeat imaging if needed
