What is vestibular Rehabilitation (Balance Exercises)?
Balance comes from the brain combining input from the vestibular system in the inner ear, the eyes and muscle and joint sense. After vestibular neuritis, some inner ear diseases, a head injury or age-related changes, if the brain does not adapt to this imbalance by itself, dizziness, a swaying feeling and fear of falling can last weeks or months. Vestibular rehabilitation speeds up the brain's adaptation (compensation) with gaze stabilisation exercises, habituation to head and body movements, and balance and walking training. It is different from positional vertigo due to loose crystals (BPPV); in BPPV, repositioning manoeuvres come first. If sudden dizziness comes with slurred speech, weakness or double vision, call emergency services (112 in Turkey) because of the possibility of a stroke.
