What is lazy Eye Treatment (Patching and Glasses)?
Lazy eye (amblyopia) is when the brain does not learn to use the image from an eye well enough, even though the eye itself is healthy. The most common causes are a squint, a difference in prescription between the two eyes and a high focusing error; conditions that block the line of sight, such as a congenital cataract or a drooping lid, can also cause it. Because the visual system is very flexible at a young age, the earlier treatment starts the better the result. The basis of treatment is correcting the underlying focusing error with glasses and covering the good eye with a patch for set hours a day (patching) so the lazy eye works. In some children, drops are put in the good eye to blur its vision temporarily (penalisation). A pre-school eye examination is the most effective way to catch lazy eye early.
