What is umbilical Hernia Repair?

An umbilical hernia is when fat from inside the abdomen or a loop of bowel pushes out under the skin through a weak spot in the abdominal wall at the belly button. In adults, pregnancy, excess weight, chronic cough, fluid in the abdomen and heavy lifting raise the risk. During surgery the contents of the hernia sac are pushed back into the abdomen and the gap is closed. Very small gaps can be closed with stitches alone; for larger gaps, a synthetic mesh is usually used because it has been shown to lower the risk of recurrence. The mesh can be placed through a small cut under the belly button (open), or through a few small holes in the abdomen (laparoscopic or robotic). If the abdominal muscles have also separated (diastasis), repair can be planned at the same time. Most umbilical hernias in babies close by themselves in the first years; this page mainly covers repair in adults.

How is umbilical Hernia Repair done?

  1. Examination of the size of the hernia standing and when coughing, and whether it can be pushed back by hand
  2. Ultrasound or CT if needed to measure the gap and check for other hernias
  3. Local anaesthesia with sedation, spinal or general anaesthesia
  4. An incision at the edge of the belly button (open) or a few small holes in the abdomen (keyhole)
  5. Pushing back the hernia contents, closing the gap with stitches or a mesh and preserving the belly button's shape
