What is strabismus (Squint) Surgery?

Strabismus (squint) means the two eyes do not look at the same point; one eye turns in, out, up or down. Not every squint needs surgery: in some children the turn is fully corrected with glasses, and if there is a lazy eye, patching is done first. If the eye still turns despite glasses and lazy-eye treatment, surgery is planned. The eyeball is not taken out during surgery; the membrane covering the white of the eye is opened to reach the outer eye muscles, and a muscle is weakened by moving its attachment back or strengthened by shortening it. In children, the aim is to support the eyes working together and the development of depth perception, so timing matters. In adults, squint surgery is not only cosmetic: it can reduce double vision, correct a habitual head tilt and widen the field of vision. In some adults, adjustable stitches allow the eye position to be fine-tuned after surgery.

How is strabismus (Squint) Surgery done?

  1. Measuring visual acuity, the glasses prescription (with drops in children) and the angle of the turn with prisms
  2. Completing glasses and lazy-eye treatment
  3. Planning which muscle to operate on and by how much
  4. Muscle surgery under general anaesthesia in children, and general or local anaesthesia in adults
  5. An early check-up and fine-tuning with adjustable stitches if needed
