What is chronic Wound Care (Non-Healing Wounds)?

A chronic wound is one that does not heal in the expected time (usually 4–6 weeks). The most common causes are diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores in bed-bound patients, and leg ulcers due to venous or arterial insufficiency. Treating a chronic wound is not just about dressings: the cause that delays healing (pressure, poor circulation, infection, uncontrolled blood sugar, poor nutrition) must be found and corrected. Removing dead tissue (debridement), modern dressings that balance wound moisture, negative pressure wound therapy (vacuum) if needed, and closing the healing wound with a skin graft or flap are all parts of treatment. Off-loading and procedures to open blocked arteries are decisive in diabetic foot ulcers, and compression in venous ulcers.

How is chronic Wound Care (Non-Healing Wounds) done?

  1. Measuring and photographing the wound and finding its cause
  2. Assessing circulation (ABI, Doppler), infection and blood sugar
  3. Debridement and choosing a suitable dressing
  4. Vacuum therapy, hyperbaric oxygen or surgical closure if needed
  5. Weekly check-ups and education on preventive care
